This is why driving out west was so thrilling - it was terrifying knowing that this beautiful landscape can kill you dead in a second, so fast you'll never know what hit you. Living on the Gulf Coast can be hairy, but it doesn't just come out of nowhere; there's usually some warning.
Thank the environmentalists for this. Years ago San Diego installed concrete lined drainage canals to handle storms like this. But over the years they filled with dirt and debris and non-native trees started growing in the canals. The environmentalists screamed that removing those trees was wrong so the trees stayed and the canals filled with more dirt and debris. When these storms hit the water couldn't drain in the canals so it overflowed into the neighborhoods.
